This thread is meant to explain and help people with original characters. The Character Application can be found in the Application Database Board under the Character Station Category. Remember all writing must be done in the third person.
-When first starting a character sometimes the hardest thing to do is to come up with the character's name. Being someone who considers themselves a pro-role player I often find myself getting tired of using the same names more then once. When I need help there are several websites I turn too for character names. The most popular website that I like to use is 20,000 Names. It is a great website to search names of all sorts of ethic and even mythological background.
Other Websites:
-The next thing I usually do on creating a character is trying to either think or come up with what the character looks like. Sometimes this might come first in the creative process. I often borrow from other people's work or even people in my own life to conduct a character's appearance. Some popular websites that I use to look for a character's appearance are Deviant Art, Photo Bucket, and Google Images. Remember that if their is a face claim for a character you cannot use that character's description for a character you want to have. Refer to the Face Claim thread for more information.
Popular Used Searches:
-With the Character's Appearance and Name complete its time to start on the Character's Personality. When you think about personality you want to keep in mind that character's are complex beings, just like humans. No personality is the same, this is the same in real life and in characters. They have things they are passionate about, they have quirks, flaws, strengths, different ways of expressing emotions, different behaviors, and different attitudes. The more in depth you add to a character's personality, the better off the character will be when you role play. One of the first things I do with a character's personality is look at the character's alignment. For this I refer to the nine alignments.
-Following the Character's Personality, sometimes a very hard thing for me to figure out is a character's powers. The first step in this of course is deciding if you want your character to be a Power User, Rare Kind, or Neither. For more information on Power User's and Rare Kinds look at both the Story Line Thread and the Powers & Abilities Thread. There are certain powers that are limited only to canon characters. If you are looking for ideas for Powers I try a couple of different sites including Wikipedia for powers.
-Going right along with the Character's Power comes the Character's Techniques. Once again this goes right along with your character's previous position on Power User, Rare Kind, or Neither. Character Techniques are a character's attacks. In order to help with god modding, all characters are required to have at least one technique (Maximum of Ten). A technique can be an attack, a defensive move, a dodge, etc. An example of a technique would be Rei Ogami's Burning Hand: Rei takes off his glove and can cause physical objects he touches to catch flame. This is limited only to objects and NPCs and the burning only lasts one post. Once used Rei cannot use the ability for two of my next posts. When making an technique their should be a description of what the technique does along with the limitation of what the character can do with the technique. Also there must be a cool down for each technique. A cool down is the amount of time (in posts) that must pass before the technique can be used again.
-The next few options that you have to consider with the character is your character's fighting style and if you want your character to have a weapon or not. Seeing as this role play takes place in pretty much present times, there is a wide variety of fighting styles and weapons. For Code Breakers, some carry weapons others do not. A weapon is an optional thing. If you need help on deciding on what kind of weapon you do want your character to have you should check out Wikipedia For a pretty detailed list of what kind of weapon you want to consider. Every character does though have a fighting style. Some rely solely on their power and abilities while others take more of a hand to hand or weapon based style approach. This is a different list of fighting styles that you might want to check out:
In addition to character weapons and fighting style you'll have to decide if you want your character to have any significant items. This is an optional field, where you can list items in your Character's Inventory. These can be potions, money pouches, etc. As long as it is something that will not cause problems with power-playing or god-modding character items should not be a problem.
-There are really only two major sections that can cause some trouble for people. The first is the Character's History. A Character's History is arguably the most important part of the character's profile. This is the character's story, their history from birth to the current point. To make a good character history they should all have the following criteria: setting, involvement with other people in the character's life, and some sort of problem that comes about in the character's life. This problem could lead to another problem or have been overcome. Either way you want your character to have something to strive for when role playing. When making the character's history there are a couple things you also want to keep in mind. First they have to relate to the Code: Breaker universe. (This means no characters from other animes, books, movies, mangas, etc.) Original Characters are called original for a reason. While you can have a character based off of one of these, the history should have enough differences that the staff should not be able to tell it was based off of something.
-Finally the last section that should be completed is the Role Play Sample. This is required only for members who are creating their very first character. (This is different for canon characters. All canon characters are required to have a Role Play Sample). This is basically the area where you show staff your ability to role play. Grammar and Spelling are a key here. You want to paint a scene for your character in this role play sample. Role Play Samples only need to be ten sentences. However we always encourage members to write as much as they see fit. If that is more then ten sentences then all the better.
This wraps up our in depth look at original characters. If you have any questions that this thread did not address, we recommend you head to the Support Board. You can ask your questions there.
